It’s not even spring yet, and already a lot of women are starting off on the yearly quest to find the perfect swimsuit.  Bikini, tankini, halter, or one-piece?  The choices are almost endless, which can sometimes lead to frustration.  No matter what your body type or size, there is a suit out there that’s just right for you, and hopefully this article will help in finding it.

First of all, be honest with yourself.  Now’s not the time to be ashamed of your body!   Realistically assess your figure, which will really help when it comes time to choose a swimsuit.  Taking your shape into consideration, it’s time to go shopping!

If your torso is on the short side, opt for a suit that gives the illusion of a long, lean body.  A good choice would be a bikini with a halter top (which calls attention to the chest and shoulders), and a bottom that sits low on the hips.  Conversely, if your torso is long, try a one-piece suit or one that has high-cut leg openings, which make the legs appear a little bit longer.

If you have a large chest, buy a bikini or a one piece that has a built in bra top, and preferably an underwire.  Many manufacturers are making them these days.  The best choice would be a top that is cut straight across the chest, and has wide straps.  For those of us that aren’t so well-endowed, a bikini top that has triangle cups adds shape and the illusion of size to the bust line.

For the plus-sized, look for a one-piece in a dark color, as the darker shades have a slimming effect.  However, black isn’t your only choice.  Darker shades of red, green, or blue provide much the same slenderizing look, while adding a splash of color.  Choosing a suit with a high spandex content will play up those curves, as will a suit with a clearly defined waist.  For those with a little stomach flab, a one piece will only serve to emphasize it, while a bikini will leave you (ahem) overexposed.  Instead, choose a loose tankini style.

Once you have a few suits selected, attempt to try them on in natural light as the lights in most fitting rooms are usually harsh and unflattering.  If this isn’t possible, bring along a supportive, but objective friend to give an honest opinion.  If you don’t have a friend that will go along, a lot of swimwear stores have salespeople who can offer their advice and opinions.   Buy the suit that you feel most comfortable in.  Believe it- there’s nothing cute or sexy about feeling awkward in a swimsuit!  Don’t be seduced by trends, and buy a suit that’s not right for you or your shape just because it’s “in style”.   And, make sure that your suit fits snugly.   Swimsuit material tends to expand when it gets wet.  There’s almost nothing more embarrassing than diving into the water, and emerging only to find that you’ve lost your top.

Overall, go for a combination of fit, style, and comfort.  You want to feel sexy in your suit, don’t you?  The first step to feeling that way is to feel comfortable with the way you look.
